In 1970, Padre Pio’s secretary and friend, Mary Pyle, helped secure relics of Padre Pio for St. John the Baptist Church. These relics include a cloth that was used to absorb the blood from his sacred stigmata, which still bears the stain, and a fingerless woolen glove worn by Padre Pio. St. John the Baptist opened the shrine in 2002, after Padre Pio’s canonization, and has housed these relics ever since. St. John the Baptist Church is hopeful that the new shrine will accommodate visitors who visit the Midtown Church to honor and pray to Padre Pio.

The Fatima Statue 2014 - 2015 - 2017 Tour Schedule

Not only does the Our Lady of Fatima Statue tour, but it also has sacred relics available for veneration:

Father Luis Kondor*, Postulator for the Cause of the Beautification of Francisco and Jacinta Marto and Lucia Dos Santos presented a 1st class relic in November 2005 at his residence in Fatima, Portugal to Mrs. Judy Studer. She graciously accepted these sacred items of a piece of the holm-oak tree on which Our Blessed Mother appeared in Fatima and relics of Jacinta and Francesco. These sacred remains are encased in a small gold reliquary.''

Father Kondor requested that this gift relic travel with the United Nations Pilgrim Virgin Statue. In a final request, Father Kondor asked that Ms. Studer use the reliquary to bring hope and healing to all sick people and especially to share the story of Fatima with children.

History of the Statue

It has been determined that this statue is an official International Pilgrim Virgin Statue. These statues are property of the Fatima Sanctuary of Portugal. This wood statue was carved in the first half of the 20th century. It appears to be the work of Portuguese artist Jose Ferreira Thedim (1892-1971).
Prior to its first pilgrimage of May 13, 1947, Pope Pius XII blessed this statue. The pilgrimage was made to celebrate and commemorate the 30th anniversary of the apparition of the Blessed Mother.
On October 13, 1952, the Bishop of Fatima blessed this image for its mission to the United Nations.
On December 8th, 1952, having been brought to America from Fatima, the statue was taken into the Meditation Room of the United Nations by Msgr. Harold Colgan, founder of the Blue Army now known as the World Apostolate of Fatima. It was at the United Nations that Monsigeur Colgan led the recitation of the Rosary. Since that time, the UN International Pilgrim Statue has been part of the World Apostolate of Fatima and its Dicastery.
This treasured replica of Our Lady of Fatima has traveled the globe.

Relics of the Passion - How to Request them

Relics of the Passion

A wonderful Apostolate exists called the Apostolate for Holy Relics.  They have a traveling relic exhibit called the Relics of the Passion.  It includes 2 small splinters from the Cross on which Jesus died and a piece of the crown of thorns that was placed on Jesus’ head.  In addition they have a fragment from the column where Jesus was flogged and a piece of a bone from the body of the centurion who pierced Jesus’ side with a lance.  There are 8 relics in total.  Parishes are encouraged to invite this traveling exhibit to their Church.  There is no cost to the visit they ask only to place a good will offering basket out for donations to cover travel expenses.  The coordinator of the exhibit can explain all the details with anyone who is interested.

If interested in having these relics brought to your church or parish, contact the organizer:

Disposal of Religious Items

Disposal of religious items

by Fr. William Saunders

Q: I understand that objects of devotion that have been blessed (such as palm branches, rosaries, crucifixes, etc.) should never be simply discarded in the trash, but should be disposed of by burying them or by burning them and then burying the ashes. Is this correct? – Via email

A: As Catholics, we are accustomed to having religious objects “blessed,” which signifies the permanent sanctification and dedication of an object for some sacred purpose. I think every weekend someone asks me as well as the other priests to bless a rosary, a statue, or some other religious object. Once a religious object is blessed and dedicated for divine worship or veneration, it must be treated with reverence and must not be used in either an improper or profane way (cf. Code of Canon Law, #1171).

What happens when the rosary or statue breaks and is irreparable? Or, when the palm dries out, and the following Palm Sunday provides us with new palm? The basic rule for the disposition of these items is to burn or to bury them.

During the 1800s, both the Sacred Congregation for the Rites and the Holy Office (now known respectively as the Sacred Congregation for the Sacraments and Divine Worship, and the Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith) issued various determinations concerning this issue. Here are a few examples: A chalice which becomes “unserviceable” is not to be sold, but must be used for some other sacred purpose, or melted. Vestments, altar cloths, and linens must be destroyed.

Polluted or excess holy water must be poured into the ground. Palms are to be burned, and the ashes then used for distribution on Ash Wednesday or returned to the ground. A broken rosary or religious statue normally would be buried. In all, the underlying idea is that what has been dedicated to God should be returned to God, in a sense, the same way a person’s dead body is committed to the earth. Never should one just “throw out” what has been dedicated to God.

Therefore, the normal “rule of thumb” is that anything that has been blessed should be burned (and then the ashes buried) or simply buried. I remember as a child, several times when my father dug the hole to plant a new shrub, my Mom would first add the broken rosaries, which made me think of the new shrub as something holy. My job as a child was always to burn the old palm. Even as a pastor, I have a whole box of old palm, worn linens, and other things, that I save and burn periodically.

Living in a society where things have become so disposable, we must differentiate from trash those religious objects that have been blessed and dedicated to God for sacred use. My heart breaks every time I enter an antique store or look on EBay or another website and find a chalice, a reliquary (sometimes still containing a relic), vestments, and other sacred objects that were once used for the holy Mass. I have to wonder: “What was someone thinking to just dispose of these items in this way? What will happen to them and how will they be used? Will they even be used for a profane or Satanic purpose?” The owners should have tried to find these religious objects a new home in a mission church or disposed of them in the proper way.

Please be sure to always cherish blessed religious objects at home, venerate them with piety, and when necessary, dispose of them properly.

Treasures of the Church: Request an Exposition

Canada:

Requirements for Hosting.
Please note that all expositions to be held in a parish church require the pastor\'s authorization.  Please obtain this before making your request.  (For a school, authorization is required from the principal.  For a prison, authorization is required from the warden.)
The following provides the details relevant to hosting an exposition:

General Overview

Approximately 150 relics will be exposed for veneration, including those of St. Maria Goretti, St. Therese of Lisieux (the \"Little Flower\"), St. Francis of Assisi, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Thomas Aquinas, and St. Faustina Kowalska.  The supreme highlight is one of the largest certified relics of the True Cross in the world and a piece of the veil of Our Lady.  A complete list of these is available on the right hand side of this website (click on the image of a saint that says \"The Saints: See a list of Relics in the Exposition\").
Fr. Carlos begins each exposition with a presentation and teaching on relics which provides the catechetical and spiritual basis for the Walk with the Saints that follows the presentation.  The point of the teaching is nothing other than to present the basic Gospel message of Jesus Christ: that God is here right now and wants to be encountered; He touches us through the lives and the sacred remains of His Saints.  God never disappoints ... he always \"shows up\".  There are healings at every exposition.  Hundreds, perhaps even thousands, have been reported back to this ministry.  Spectacular ones.  There have been instances of cancer, heart disease, tumors, osteoporosis, physical deformities, etc., disappear immediately and completely.  Though a great number of miracles have been physical (the Healings tab above lists a sample of these), the most spectacular are the healing of faith where a new and deeper relationship with God and His Saints are formed in the faithful.  It is a most wonderful thing to see a parish or school renewed after an exposition.  That is the purpose and reason for this ministry.

Cost:

There is no cost for hosting an exposition.  This is to allow all parishes--even poor ones--the opportunity to host an exposition.  There is also no collection taken at an exposition.  The only financial commitments for which a parish would be obligated are:  1) to make free will baskets available at the exposition for those who desire to make a donation; and, 2) to not have any simultaneous collections or fundraising occurring during an exposition.

Venue:

Parishes are required to make the parish hall or school gym (i.e., the parish’s largest room) available as the location for the display of relics.  This is the largest traveling display of relics in the world and requires significant space.   In addition, the church must be available as the location for the talk and teaching.  The purpose of spatially separating these two components is to allow as much free space in the hall for the veneration as possible (i.e., without space taken up by large numbers of chairs).  However, if the church is not available and if the parish hall/gym is extraordinarily large there can be some flexibility on this.

Contact Person:

An email address and cell phone number would have to be provided for the local parish contact.

Advertising Resources:

Treasures of the Church provides everything that the parish would need to advertise (posters, flyers, bulletin information).Parishes must commit to publicizing the exposition in their bulletins and web pages.  In addition, they must commit to informing neighboring parishes of the exposition and requesting advertising in their bulletins.

Material and Equipment Requirements:

The following is a list of things the parish would need to provide on the date of the exposition:
  1. An extension cord and power strip (set-up in the church).
  2. A small table on which to put a digital projector and computer (set-up in the church).
  3. portable microphone; a clip-on microphone or a wireless microphone, if available, is best (for use in the church).
  4. 20 CLEAN tables; either 6 or 8 feet in length are fine; round tables will not work unfortunately; tablecloths are provided Treasures of the Church (set-up in the hall).
  5. A bottle of glass cleaner (e.g., Windex) and some paper towels (for use in the hall).
  6. Two volunteers to help set up at the start of the day and take down at the end of the day (please, no more than two).

Media:

Many pastors desire to inform the local media (local TV and newspapers, diocesan news, Catholic radio, etc.) of their exposition and to request coverage of the event.  This is fine and  encouraged.  However, it is requested that a time for any desired media interviews with Fr. Carlos be arranged prior to the date of the exposition so as to not interfere with set-up of the relics display, which normally occurs two hours before the scheduled start time.  In addition, media should be informed that there is no photography or video recording permitted during the set-up of the relics display, but only during the presentation and the time of veneration afterwards.

Lodging:

Fr. Carlos would require accommodation in the parish rectory for the night of the exposition.  If a room is not available the parish would have to provide a hotel room.

The Apostles' Creed

-------------------------------------
 The Apostles' Creed

  1. I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth:
  2. And in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord:
  3. Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary:
  4. Suffered under Pontius Pilate; was crucified, dead and buried: He descended into hell:
  5. The third day he rose again from the dead:
  6. He ascended into heaven, and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty:
  7. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead:
  8. I believe in the Holy Ghost:
  9. I believe in the holy catholic church: the communion of saints:
10. The forgiveness of sins:
1l. The resurrection of the body:
12. And the life everlasting. Amen.

Not only the Catholic Church uses the Apostles' Creed.  The Church of Denmark uses the phrase "We renounce the devil and all his doings and all his beings" before "We believe in God..."
