• Man of the Shroud Exhibit

   

  The Shroud of Turin has long been venerated by the faithful & is believed by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus of Nazareth. The Shroud is one of the most scientifically studied religious icons in history. As science has progressed, so has the speculation on how the image of the crucified man of the Shroud was made.
  
  The exhibit presents the results of a comprehensive scientific, historical & forensic study with numerous photos & illustrations. The exhibit is the work of the Center for the Study of the Passion of Christ & the Holy Shroud & Monsignor Giulio Ricci & other scientists, who spent more than 25 years researching the Holy Shroud.
   
  The centerpiece of the exhibit is a full-length replica of the Shroud developed from a photographic image of the Shroud made by the Eastman Kodak Co. The replica shows the front & back of the shroud.  In addition, the mobile exhibit contains a large crucified corpus showing the wounds of Christ corresponding to the passion narrative in the Gospel accounts & the wounds shown on the Shroud. The exhibit contains 92 panels detailing the history & science of the Shroud. 

  The Conventual Franciscan Friars of Marytown—the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe make this important mobile exhibit & evangelization tool available on loan.

Biography of Saint Padre Pio

Padre Pio was born on May 25, 1887 in Pietrelcina, southern Italy. He was tutored privately until his entry to novitiate of Capuchin Friars at age of 15. Of feeble health but strong will, with help of grace, he completed required studies & was ordained a priest in 1910.

On Sept 20, 1918 the 5 wounds of our Lord’s passion appeared on his body, making him first stigmatized priest in history of Catholic Church. Countless persons were attracted to his confessional & many more received his saintly counsel & spiritual guidance through correspondence.

His whole life was marked by long hours of prayer & continual austerity. His letters to his spiritual directors reveal ineffable suffering, physical & spiritual, which accompanied him all through his life. They also reveal his deep union with God, his burning love for Blessed Eucharist & Our Blessed Lady.

On Jan 9, 1940, Padre Pio announced his grandiose plans to develop a Home for Relief of Suffering (Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza). The Casa opened its doors on May 5, 1956 as a 300 bed facility, built on small, sincere & spontaneous donations & prayers of his followers.

He also developed an international network of prayer groups for support of Casa & its ministry that continues to live on & grow today.

Padre Pio considered Casa Sollievo Della Sofferenza (Casa) his “Work”, inspired & blessed by God, to be a haven of relief from suffering for all of God’s children in pain in body or soul. It is a model community of Catholic Christian health delivery, & has grown into a regional referral center of international renown.

Today, with over 1,000 beds & services comparable to most academic research centers of excellence, Casa is thriving by God’s graces in one of most remote, desolate & poorest areas of Italy…atop Mount Gargano, 4 hours from Rome.

Worn out by over half a century of intense suffering & constant apostolic activity in San Giovanni Rotondo, Padre Pio was called to his heavenly reward on Sept 23, 1968. After a public funeral, which attracted over 100,000 mourners, his body was entombed in crypt of Our Lady of Grace Church. Increasing numbers flock to his tomb from all parts of world & many testify to spiritual &  temporal graces received.

On 16th of Feb 1973, Archbishop of Manfredonia, Msgr. Valentino Vailati, consigned documentation to Sacred Congregation of Causes of Saints so as to obtain “nihil obstat” for beginning of process of his Beatification.

On Dec 18, 1997, by reading of decree on herocity of virtues, Holy Father John Paul II declared Padre Pio “Venerable.”, & on June 16, 2002, over 500,000 Padre Pio devotees gathered in Rome to witness Pope John Paul II proclaim Padre Pio, “Saint Pio of Pietrelcina”.

Saint Ann’s Shrine is located on the same property as St. Paschal Baylon Church. From I-271, take Wilson Mills Road West 2 miles. Saint Ann’s Shrine is on the left.  Additional parking for the church may be found by turning left on Colony Dr., then turn right into church parking lot.

 

History of the Shrine

In 1892, Pope Leo XIII sent a first class relic of Saint Ann to the famous Shrine of Saint Ann de Beaupré in Canada. On the way to Canada, the bearer of this precious relic stopped in New York City at the then little church of Saint Jean Baptiste.  The relic was exposed in the church, and miraculously the sick and afflicted were cured, the blind saw, the lame walked, souls came back to God!
For three weeks, crowds thronged to Saint Jean Baptiste Church from every part of the country. On the day of the departure for the Shrine of Saint Ann in Beaupré, Canada, the relic was carried through the crowded church amid cries of: “Good-bye Good Saint Ann! Come back soon!”
Moved by such devotion, the bearer of the relic arrived at Beaupré and requested a portion of the wonder-working relic be returned to Saint Jean’s in New York.  As a result, the relic was divided and a portion of it was returned to the church in New York. The first annual Novena (nine days of prayer leading up to the Feast of Saint Ann on July 26th) began July 17, 1892 and has continued every year in the United States.
In 1900, Archbishop Corrigan of New York invited the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in Montreal to administer a parish in New York City. Saint Jean Baptiste Church became a center of Eucharistic devotion for the whole country, and the first community of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament in the United States.
A portion of the relic of Saint Ann came to rest at Saint Ann’s Shrine in Cleveland, Ohio when the provincial headquarters of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament was relocated.  There is a link between Saint Ann and the Congregation since the Congregation in the United States is named the “Province of Saint Ann”.
The first Triduum (three days of prayer leading up to the Feast of Saint Ann on July 26th) in honor of Saint Ann was held July 24-26, 1987 in Cleveland, Ohio at Saint Paschal Baylon Church.  It has become a yearly event since that time.  An annual nine-day Novena is held at Saint Jean Baptiste Church in New York City (Manhattan) every year from July 18-26.
Having the shrine at the provincial headquarters of the Congregation of the Blessed Sacrament allows more people to visit the shrine and participate in the age-old devotion to Good Saint Ann. The Shrine is open for Mass, private prayer, veneration of the relic, and recitation of the rosary weekdays 9 am – 5 pm (excluding holidays)
