Traveling Relic of Saint Damien - Hawaii

Traveling relic of St. Damien available for veneration

Damien Seminarian

Diocese of Honolulu

1184 Bishop St, Honolulu, Hawaii 96813

Phone: (808) 585-3300

The Diocese of Honolulu has a “traveling relic” of St. Damien, available for veneration wherever it is welcome.

"We are putting the word out to bishops,” Bishop Larry Silva said.   The relic is made up of bone fragments shed from another relic, a talus (ankle) bone now on permanent display in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace.

Typically, the relic of a saint would be put on display in a church or chapel for the faithful to approach it, view it, perhaps touch the box it is in, and pray in its presence. The bishop has assigned Sacred Hearts Father Paul Zaccone as the person who “will normally be the one to take the relic to its various locations.” “He will be prepared to give talks and to lead prayers, if desired,” the bishop explained in an e-mail message. Father Zaccone will also arrange for any accompanying literature, art and religious objects that would supplement the display of the relic, the bishop said.

The relic is owned by the Diocese of Honolulu. Bishop Silva said that he would consider future requests directly from individual parishes, convents, monasteries or other church entities. The diocesan Office of Worship would handle requests. The bone fragments are held in a 6-inch by 9-inch by 4-inch reliquary of polished monkeypod wood, and are visible behind a thick oval glass window on the lid. The box is secured by a brass Louis Vuitton padlock made in Paris. It is carried in a donated 16-inch long black leather bag by Prada. The reliquary was made by 2 Makawao, Maui, craftsmen, Edwin Ferreira and Allan Marciel. The wood comes from a 100-year-old tree Father Damien planted on topside Molokai near the church he built in Kaluaaha, Our Lady of Seven Sorrows.

Transportation costs of the traveling relic will be the responsibility of the diocese or other entity that requests it. This includes coach class airfare, ground transportation, and room and board for the person accompanying the relic. The relic will always be hand-carried, the bishop said, never mailed or checked in as luggage.

Another St. Damien relic, the remains of his right hand, lies in the priest’s original grave alongside St. Philomena Church in Kalawao, Molokai, where he was buried in 1889.

Exhibitions

Over the past 7 years, thousands of people from all walks of life have come to visit our Holy Face Exhibition. Located in various cities (at different times) across all of North America, the exhibition gives both believers and non-believers an opportunity to see first-hand for themselves, the authenticity and sheer grandeur of the Holy Shroud. It also provides visitors with a deeper understanding and awareness of all the terrible pain and suffering that our Lord endured for all of us.

Programs they offer:

The Holy Face Association offers several programs to help in the conversion of souls for their salvation. Read about the various programs below and feel free to contact us for more information, should you have any questions. These programs are currently available in the Western hemisphere only (North and South America).

Holy Face Church Program - (Lord, that we may see Thy Face)
If the Pastor wishes to enshrine the illuminated (or non-illuminated) framed Holy Face picture permanently in the church, the Association will donate this picture, plus Holy Face devotional material, as well as a percentage of large Holy Face pictures and novenas for the parishoners.  Also, the Association will help to start up (preferably on Tuesdays) a Holy Face Hour of reparation. (available in Western Hemisphere only).

Holy Face Home Program - (Our Lord Comes To Visit His Children)

A group should be formed (minimum 2 people, 3 preferred) and they should choose a name by which the group will be known (preferably that of a saint or an angel).  This designated group will then be responsible for taking the illuminated, framed Holy Face picture to different private homes, including retirement homes, and leave the picture at every location for 9 consecutive days.  The group will recite the first day Novena Prayer with the residents of the home and return on the ninth day to again recite the ninth day Novena Prayer, as well as the Act of Consecration.  It is suggested that the Rosary also be said each day in thanksgiving and reparation.  After the consecration has been made (and before the membership form is filled out), a Holy Face picture (framed by the group) should be enshrined in the consecrated home.  The illuminated, framed Holy Face picture is then brought to another home. (available in Western Hemisphere only).

Holy Face Hospital Program - (Our Lord Consoles His Children)

You cannot look at the Most Holy Face of Jesus and fail to see His terrible suffering.  The dear souls in the hospitals have the opportunity of suffering with Jesus; united with Jesus, they can offer all to our Heavenly Father to make reparation and help save many souls.  Prayer leaflets and medals are given to hospital patients (all have been blessed); being sick, most will find it difficult to say prayers, but we ask that they gaze upon the Holy Face of Jesus illustrated on the promise card.  In doing so, they actually console Jesus, and one will always receive more than he or she can give, for God will always reward a cheerful giver.

Holy Face Missionary Program - (Go out to the whole world)

The Association, depending on who requests it, will donate Holy Face devotional materials and medals, plus Holy Face pictures in order to help all souls find, love and console Jesus.  The churches are supplied with a large 16 x 20 inch Holy Face picture (not framed) and other material for those who wish to start a Holy Face Holy Hour of reparation.

Holy Face Prison Program - (I was in prison and you visited me)

When a prisoner writes the Association, they will receive an envelope containing Holy Face devotional literature and a Holy Face Medal (blessed).  By separate post, the inmate will receive a Sacred and Immaculate Heart picture, plus a booklet containing all necessary prayers.  Those who participate in this program are supplied (if they so wish) with rosaries, scapulars and different spiritual books to help them on the road of salvation.

Holy Face School Program - (That they may learn)

When a Principal of a school and/or a teacher writes to the Association, it will do its utmost to cooperate in helping the children to know and love the Most Holy Face of Jesus, through the donation of Holy Face devotional material and medals to interested classmates.  Also, if they wish, a large, unframed Holy Face picture will be sent, upon request, to be enshrined in the school.

You click the arrow on the window and live adoration is available.

THE EUCHARISTIC MONSTRANCE

Upon entering Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament adoration chapel, the eye is naturally drawn to the monstrance where the Eucharistic Jesus is enthroned.  The monstrance is five feet, two inches tall and has been entirely fashioned from sacrificial gifts of jewelry.
Symbols of the four Evangelists grace the base, signifying that Eucharistic doctrine is based in Sacred Scripture.  The stem of the monstrance is formed by a figure of Mary Immaculate crushing the head of a serpentine Satan.  The removable lunela holds Jesus truly present in the consecrated host.  Encircling it are eight medallions portraying “types,” or symbols of the Blessed Sacrament.
A podium of marble with angels in high relief and grateful expression supports the monstrance.  Learn more about the monstrance by clicking HERE.

THE ALTAR OF EXPOSITION

Sanctus, Sanctus, Sanctus: Holy, Holy, Holy, carved in the steps leading to the altar proclaim the sacredness of this space.  Nine species of imported marble make up the altar’s construction.  Its frontal area is a masterpiece, inlaid with mosaics representing the Mass as sacrifice: the breaking of bread at Emmaus, the sacrifices of Abraham and Melchisedech.

St. Maximilian Kolbe, Martyr of Charity

St. Maximilian was born Raymond Kolbe in Poland, January 8, 1894. In 1910, he entered the Conventual Franciscan Order. He was sent to study in Rome where he was ordained a priest in 1918.

Father Maximilian returned to Poland in 1919 and began spreading his Militia of the Immaculata movement of Marian consecration (whose members are also called MIs), which he founded on October 16, 1917. In 1927, he established an evangelization center near Warsaw called Niepokalanów, the "City of the Immaculate." By 1939, the City had expanded from eighteen friars to nearly 900, making it the largest Catholic religious house in the world.
To better "win the world for the Immaculata," the friars utilized the most modern printing and administrative techniques. This enabled them to publish countless catechetical and devotional tracts, a daily newspaper with a circulation of 230,000 and a monthly magazine with a circulation of over one million. Maximilian started a radio station and planned to build a motion picture studio--he was a true "apostle of the mass media." He established a City of the Immaculata in Nagasaki, Japan, in 1930, and envisioned missionary centers worldwide.
Maximilian was a ground-breaking theologian. His insights into the Immaculate Conception anticipated the Marian theology of the Second Vatican Council and further developed the Church's understanding of Mary as "Mediatrix" of all the graces of the Trinity, and as "Advocate" for God's people.
In 1941, the Nazis imprisoned Father Maximilian in the Auschwitz death camp. There he offered his life for another prisoner and was condemned to slow death in a starvation bunker. On August 14, 1941, his impatient captors ended his life with a fatal injection. Pope John Paul II canonized Maximilian as a "Martyr of Charity" and “Patron Saint of our difficult century” in 1982. St. Maximilian Kolbe is the patron of journalists, families, prisoners, the pro-life movement and the chemically addicted.

During the Jubilee Year 2000, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops designated Marytown as the National Shrine of St. Maximilian Kolbe.
Pilgrims are welcome to venerate the relics of this Polish Conventual Franciscan priest, publisher, theologian and evangelist. His life of charity and heroic death in the Auschwitz death camp is commemorated in our Kolbe/Holocaust Exhibit. Saint Maximilian is considered the patron of journalists, families, prisoners, the pro-life movement, those afflicted with chemical dependency and eating disorders, and the media communications. Come and visit an inspirational place of prayer, hospitality, evangelization, and personal spiritual growth!

A HOLY PLACE OF MARY’S FAVORS

Since 1875, countless pilgrims have journeyed to the Basilica and National Shrine of Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio to offer prayers of thanks Maryand to confide their needs to the Mother of God as Mary, Consoler of the Afflicted.
Devotion to Mary under this title dates back to the second century and is among her earliest titles of honor. In the 17th century, as plague ravaged the population of Luxembourg, the people formed a special union with Mary, Consoler of the Afflicted.
An image of her was enshrined in a small chapel built on the outskirts of town and many favors were authenticated among visiting pilgrims. In 1652, the Pope fostered devotion to Our Lady under this title by establishing a confraternity.
The devotion spread to the United States, and the first shrine to Our Lady of Consolation was built in Carey, Ohio. A replica statue was commissioned and arrived from Luxembourg in 1875.
Since 1875, Mary, the Mother of God, has manifested herself as a most loving Mother to the thousands of the devoted pilgrims at this shrine. Through her prayers, the sick and afflicted have found health, comfort and consolation.
Our Lady of Consolation offers a number of special events and heritage days throughout the year.  All are welcome at anytime on their journey to faith, hope and healing.

Maria Stein Shrine of Holy Relics, Maria Stein, Ohio

The Maria Stein Shrine of Holy Relics is the second largest collection of relics in the United States located in Maria Stein, Ohio. It was founded in 1875 by father J. M. Gartner who entrusted his collection of relics to the Sisters at Maria Stein.

With 1,100 relics - of which 95% are “first class relics” (from the body of the saint, usually part of a bone) - the Maria Stein Convent was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. The convent includes second class relics (clothes and items that the saint used), and third class relics ( things that a saint touched) as well.

In addition to the permanent holy relics display, the shrine features a diverse store of expositions, which change annually and may include exhibits of the homes of the region, lace making, presentations by local artists and craftspeople, and a quilt collection.

Down a path from the main buildings of the shrine is a tiny church referred to as the "Chapel in the Woods," in which there is an altar, edged by angel-shaped lamps.
